Abstract

Objective: To investigate the use of self-medication by the population of a district of Itajubá, Minas Gerais, attended by the Family Health Team, and to identify their socio-epidemiological characteristics. Materials and methods: 238 families were visited and a questionnaire, developed by the researchers was applied only to the individuals who used drugs without prescription in the 30 days before the day of the survey. Results: Among the 839 people selected (visited 238 families), 183 people (21.8%) used at least one drug without prescription in the previous 30 days. Of these, 66.1% were women and 87.4% were over 18 years of age. The painkillers were the most frequently used medications (62.2%) and headache was the most common condition (50.8%). The drug was chosen on account of the own individual in 32% of cases. Conclusion: The self-medication in a population assisted by the Family Health Team was smaller than in people without the same assistance, but more studies with the used approach are necessary.
