Abstract

ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the epidemiology and assess the prevalence of diseases which are responsible for high-risk pregnancies that occur with premature birth. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 292 medical records of pregnant women admitted to the maternity ward of School Hospital of Itajuba Medical School in 2013. After analysis, the data were compared to obtain an epidemiological profile. Results: We identified as prevalent diseases correlated with preterm delivery: premature rupture of membranes (48.8%) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (25.5%). Regarding the types of delivery, 61% were cesarean sections, 34.09% being premature births, including 68% of premature newborns requiring intensive care. Conclusion: The prevalence of premature births in this study has found that the appropriate service assistance to high-risk pregnant women can potentially reduce the prematurity rate.
