Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the health care of inmates in the Brazilian prison system in the last 10 years. An integrative literature review of publications in Brazil on the subject was conducted, using the descriptors "prisons", "health", "disease", "prevention" and "delivery of health care" on BIREME and SciELO databases. The number of studies related to the health care of inmates is growing in Brazil. Therefore, in the North, Northeast and Midwest Regions these numbers are still low. It was found that most of the studies characterized the main problems according to the National Health Plan for the Prison System (PNSSP) and proposed some solutions to the prison system, but there are still few interventional studies, preventive strategies and related diseases such as leprosy, diabetes, hypertension, cancers, oral health, drugs abuse and alcohol ingestion.
