Physical therapy in the sexual and muscular function of the pelvic floor after treatment of cervical cancer
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To verify the effectiveness of physiotherapy on the sexual and muscular function of the pelvic floor after treatment of cervical cancer. Methods: This is a case series of 10 women undergoing treatment for cervical cancer and post-surgical physiotherapeutic follow-up at Hospital Ophir Loyola, Belém, Pará. The muscle function of the pelvic floor was assessed using PERFECT and the sexual function by the Female Sexual Function Index. In the physiotherapy protocol, trigger points were released on the pelvic floor muscles, perineal massage, and pelvic floor muscle training. The procedures were performed weekly for over six weeks. Results: The mean age was 39.6 ± 7.6 years. All participants underwent radiation therapy. The function of the pelvic floor muscles showed improvement at the end of the protocol, as well as sexual function, but both without statistical significance. Conclusion: Physical therapy treatment can improve sexual and muscular functions in women undergoing treatment for cervical cancer.
