Abstract
Objective: Evaluate the quality of life (QOL) of diabetic patients using the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Methods: quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive study, carried out with 98 diabetic patients assisted in a Family Health Strategy in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, Brazil, using a sociodemographic questionnaire and the SF-36. Results: 59 (60.2%) were female, and the age group between 50 and 69 corresponded to 46.9% of the sample. Type 2 diabetes mellitus was the most prevalent (68.4%), and the majority (80.6%) used exclusively oral hypoglycemic agents. The mean of the SF-36 domains varied between 42.6 ± 44.9 (Limitation due to Physical Aspects) and 70.0 ± 30.1 (Social Aspects). People with diabetes participating in educational activities had better QoL scores in the Pain domain (61.2 ± 24.8 vs. 45.4 ± 26.2; p = 0.015). Conclusion: SF-36 scores were median, suggesting a negative influence of diabetes on the participants' quality of life. Group educational activities were associated with higher mean scores in the domains of the QOL score.
