Abstract

Objective: To determine the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of cutaneous melanoma (CM) in the western region of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive study evaluated the clinical behavior and epidemiological profile of CM in patients from 78 municipalities in the west of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, from 2002 to 2016, treated in the Unified Health System. The chi-square test was used for group analysis. For survival curve analysis, a period of 10 years was considered (Log Rank test). Results: Data from 1,146 patients were evaluated, and there was an average of 20 cases/100,000 inhabitants/year. Most patients (63.5%) were in stages I and II. The overall survival at 10 years of follow-up was 89% (95%CI 87.7% - 91.5%). Female patients had higher survival rates (94.5%; 95%CI 92.7% - 96.4% vs. 82.6%; 95%CI 78.9% - 86.3%; p < 0.001) and variables with a better prognosis. Conclusions: the west of the state of Santa Catarina had a high prevalence of CM. The clinical and epidemiological characteristics agree with those described in populations residing in equivalent geographical regions, but they differ from other Brazil regions. These differences, associated with the reference and counter-reference organization of the public health system, may explain the survival results.
