Abstract

ABSTRACT
Objective: To estimate the amount of residual oil that is sold in the city, with the major retailers as samples of the product, and estimate the amount of oil intended through ecopoints oil collection in the city. Methods: We collected the amount of oil that was sold in 2013, from five establishments of reference in the city, along with the amount of oil that was to be reused. Data were compared and discussed following the guidelines of current legislation. Results: After the search in the selected establishments, it was seen that was marketed in the year 2013 425.301 kilograms of oil equivalent to 600,429 liters were sold According to surveys raised in fifteen ecopoints city, the amount of waste cooking oil that has been reused corresponds to only 10.6% of all oil traded in 2013, which represents 45,055 pounds of oil. Discussion: The percentage of oil which is reused in the city is too small considering the amount that is sold. The city has a municipal law for the proper disposal of the waste, however the lack of awareness of the population and also the lack of supervision result in non-compliance with the law, as well as the improper disposal of waste cooking oil. Conclusion: probably much of the residual cooking oil is still disposed of improperly.
