Respiratory muscle strength of patients in the pre and postoperative of liver transplantation
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To compare respiratory muscle strength in patients before and after liver transplantation. Methods: Observational, prospective and quantitative study, carried out in the transplant sector of a teaching hospital between May and August 2019, cirrhotic patients aged 18 years or older were included. Sociodemographic variables, aetiology of cirrhosis and the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) were collected. Respiratory muscle strength was assessed by manovacuometry, which measures maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP). Results: 28 transplant patients were included, 64% male, with a mean age of 57.1 years, with an average MELD score of 22.6, 50% of the transplants were performed due to alcohol cirrhosis. There was an extremely significant decrease (p<0.0001) in MIP (89.1±28.1 versus 52.6±27.7 cmH2O respectively) and in MEP obtained (82.6±20.9 versus 38.1±18,5 cmH2O respectively) and MIP (90.1±27.6 versus 53.5±27.7% respectively) and MEP in percentages of predicted (79.1±16.7 versus 37.3±19.2% respectively) between pre and postoperative. Conclusion: There was a reduction in respiratory muscle strength between pre and postoperative in this group of patients undergoing liver transplantation.
